“In all of us there is a hunger, marrow deep, to know our heritage -
to know who we are and where we came from. Without this enriching
knowledge, there is a hollow yearning. No matter what our attainments
in life, there is still a vacuum, an emptiness, and the most
disquieting loneliness.” — Alex Haley, Roots

Welcome everyone to the home of the Stark County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society on the web. Since our inception in 1973 our mission has been to bring together all people with an interest in genealogy as a hobby or a profession. We mainly accomplish that mission by the three ways that are mentioned below.

Monthly Meetings

One of the biggest ways that we accomplish our mission here is through our Monthly Meetings. These meetings are held in Room 107 at the Trinity United Church of Christ in Canton on the second Thursday of each month except for our annual picnic in July, the annual banquet in November, and the Christmas break in December. These meetings usually consist of a society meeting followed by various speakers and presentations on genealogy in general or on the history and people of Stark County.

Snacks and refreshments are served at 6:30 pm and the meeting starts at 7:00 pm. As always guests are welcome to attend. For a complete list of the meetings for the year please look on our Meetings page or you can look at the left sidebar to see when our latest meeting will be and what it will be about.

Our website and Facebook page are one of the ways that we are trying to reach out to the public and fellow members in order to provide them with information about the society as well as resources that we can host on our site or direct them to. We have continued this initiative by integrating our website, email newsletter and Facebook page together so that we can update you through all three of these platforms very easily. We hope that this will facilitate more communications between members and guests of our Facebook page as well as keep everyone informed of future events and opportunities through your email and on Facebook.

It is now easier for us to provide you with updates from the website since they will now automatically go out to your email if you email newsletter subscription. If you are not already on the list please use the small form on the left sidebar to do so. In the near future we will be implementing a way for you to purchase our books just like the way you can purchase your membership through online services provided by Paypal. Starting soon we will also be providing a members only section with various resources and tools that fellow members may use which will increase the value of their membership and this website.

Our Newsletter is another way that we can communicate our mission and give our fellow members additional resources and advice that will help them on there genealogical journey. Each issue gives the society news along with insightful articles on different genealogical methods and resources available to you.

The newsletter is published 4 times a year and is one of the benefits of becoming a member of the society. If you would like to know more about the benefits of membership please go to our membership page to see how you can become a member today.
