2010 Meeting Programs

Unless otherwise stated, meetings of the Stark County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society are held at 7:00 p.m. on the 2nd Thursday of the month in Room 107 of the Trinity United Church of Christ at 3909 Blackburn Road Northwest in Canton, OH. Social time is from 6:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Visitors are always welcome.

January 14: Society Business Meeting. – There will be no program for this meeting. We will be addressing various society issues which include Insurance for the Society, incorporation and we will also be looking at our society charter. All members are strongly encouraged to come and participate.

February 11: Early Auto Industry of Stark County-Christopher Kenney of the McKinley Presidential Library and Museum will be presenting a program on the Early Auto Industry of Stark County.

March 11: Improving your Genealogical Research on the Internet - Roger Marble will be showing us some new intriguing ways in which we can improve our genealogical research through the use of the internet.

April 8: Field Trip to the Stark County Records Center - We will be taking a field trip to the Stark County Records Center and talk to John Runion there about the types of records stored there and how to access them.  We will meet there at 7:00 pm and if you need directions to the Center then click right here.

May 13: Scan Party!! – Come and bring all those old family photos that you have been meaning to get scanned into your computer because we will be scanning them to build up our collection of photos as well as saving them to a CD for you to take with you. We will also explain a bit about the scanning process and give you some tips for the future.

June 10: Ohio’s Pre-Contact Native American History & Archaeology – Jill Malusky from the Massillon Museum will be discussing the Pre-Contact history of the Native American in the Ohio region.

July 5: Annual Picnic – History of the Dueber-Hampden Watchworks – Richard Halti will present to us a history of the Dueber-Hampden Watchworks which was formerly located in Canton near where I-77 is today. This will be held at the Sippo Lake Clubhouse located on the Perry drive side of Sippo Park. Please bring your own table set-up and beverage of choice, plus a side dish, salad, or dessert to share. The main course will be provided.

August 12: Fairmount Children’s Home – Carolyn Caskey will be giving a presentation on the Fairmount Children’s Home that was just south of Alliance and opened in 1870′s and operated until 1973.

September 9: Oral Histories: Preserving Stories - Mandy Pond from the Massillon Museum will present a program on how to preserve some of the great oral histories that our families have for our future generations.

October 14: One Man’s Hunt for Civil War Grave Sites - Harold A. George joins us to talk about his 8 year project to identify and locate the original burial sites of 240 Civil War veterans who served with the 9th Ohio Light Artillery.
