S.C.O.G.S. 2009 Annual Banquet

Hi everyone, I am sorry for the lateness of this post but the holiday season and a new baby has been pressing my time this year but I thought I would tell you about the Annual Banquet that was held back on the 12th of November.

Our banquet was held at the Canton Women's Club on Market Ave. in Canton of course. We enjoy a very good meal of either chicken kiev or vegetable lasagna with mixed vegetables and an apple crisp for dessert. I had the chicken myself and of course devoured the whole thing it was so delicious, especially the warm apple crisp with the ice cream. We sat with our speaker for the night Sally Whiston and had a delight conversation before and during our dinner.

After dinner of course was saw the installation of the new officers. Which are as follows: Lauren Landis (President), Tim Houck (Vice President), Martha Mertz, (Treasurer), Mary Biller (Recording Secretary) , Gloria Sturm (Corresponding Secretary)

Then we had the induction of the first class of the First Families of Stark County. The members of the class that were present were as follows, Martha Mertz, Gloria Wheeler, Stephanie Houck, Robert Strock, and Patrick Willaman. We will have a complete list of the first class available shortly on the website.

After that we had a most interesting talk with Mrs. Julia Dent Grant, wife of former President Ulysses S. Grant and former First Lady of the United States. She talked about how "Ulyee", as she called him, and her had met and about there life before and after the civil war and her husband's presidency. I was struck by the ups and downs that her and Ulyee had before and after the war and presidency. I especially liked how she always knew that her husband was "destined for greatness" even in the hard times as well as the good. After the talk Julia, aka Sally Whiston took questions as Julia and also as herself about how she got involved in historical reenactment. She does many historical female characters and can be scheduled to speak at many different events. I will have her information up shortly on the site if any of you wish to schedule her for an event.

All in all it was a wonderful evening and I have some pictures below that were taken from the event. You can also find these on the picture gallery page. Anyways, I hope you all have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
