Welcome

“In all of us there is a hunger, marrow deep, to know our heritage -
to know who we are and where we came from. Without this enriching
knowledge, there is a hollow yearning. No matter what our attainments
in life, there is still a vacuum, an emptiness, and the most
disquieting loneliness.” — Alex Haley, Roots

Welcome everyone to the home of the Stark County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society on the web. Since our inception in 1973 our mission has been to bring together all people with an interest in genealogy as a hobby or a profession. We mainly accomplish that mission by the three ways that are mentioned below.

Website

Our website is one of the ways that we are trying to reach out to the public and fellow members in order to provide them with information about the society as well as resources that we can host on our site or direct them to. This will be a bigger focus as we try to put more things online for both guest and member alike. It has started with a redesign of the site in order to provide visitors with an easier to use interface and also to allow us to expand the site with new content down the line.

It will now be easier for us to provide you with updates via the latest news page which will also be able to be subscribed to by anyone who wants to keep up with society and website news. In the near future we will be implementing a way for you to purchase our books and your membership through online services provided by Paypal. Starting next year we will also be providing a members only section with various resources and tools that fellow members may use which will increase the value of their membership and this website.

So that is a rundown of what is happening with the website so far, please check the latest news page for anything new and don’t forget to subscribe to get all the latest posts sent to your feed reader or your email. Don’t forget that we are on Facebook so if you want to you can get a hold of us on there too. Here is hoping that this coming year will be an exciting one for the society and for you as well.

Monthly Meetings

One of the biggest ways that we accomplish our mission here is through our Monthly Meetings. These meetings are held in Room 107 at the Trinity United Church of Christ in Canton on the second Thursday of each month except for our annual picnic in July, the annual banquet in November, and the Christmas break in December. These meetings usually consist of a society meeting followed by various speakers and presentations on genealogy in general or on the history and people of Stark County.

Snacks and refreshments are served at 6:30 pm and the meeting starts at 7:00 pm. As always guests are welcome to attend. For a complete list of the meetings for the year please look on our Meetings page or you can look at the left sidebar to see when our latest meeting will be and what it will be about.

Newsletter

Our Newsletter is another way that we can communicate our mission and give our fellow members additional resources and advice that will help them on there genealogical journey. Each issue gives the society news along with insightful articles on different genealogical methods and resources available to you.

The newsletter is published 4 times a year and is one of the benefits of becoming a member of the society. If you would like to know more about the benefits of membership please go to our membership page to see how you can become a member today.
